wifiWireless network improvements at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital will now allow Wi-Fi capable equipment to serve patients in Lunenburg.

In September 2017, the wireless upgrade installation at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital (FMH) received over $100,000 in funding support from the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore. The upgrade will provide two access points, allowing wireless devices to have coverage even in the event of a failure.

The Information Technology team at Fishermen’s Memorial is excited to announce with these standards in place medical staff can immediately use the existing Electrocardiogram (EKG) Carts in wireless mode, meaning staff can use the carts to look up and transmit cardiac tests from any location. Glucometers in the laboratory will also be able to be wirelessly connected.

Past Foundation Board Chair Phil Bradfield notes with an ever increasing reliance on “connected” medical technology the Health Services Foundation is pleased to support the enhancement of the wireless information technology system at Fishermen’s Memorial. “Not only will this allow more state of the art technology to be used at the hospital but will also enhance the stay of our longer term patients by keeping them connected with their family and friends”.

With the upgrade the nearly 70-year old hospital will be future ready, able to support the wireless needs of the medical industry, such as a new NSHA-driven project, replacing current Intravenous (IV) Pumps with wireless units.

Since 1993, the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore is a nonprofit, aiming to enhance healthcare equipment and services at South Shore Regional Hospital, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital and its associated sites.

planned giving handsWhile it is not a popular topic around the dinner table, leaving final donations to charities in wills is now a common practice and has been some time. The proof? The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore found it as they reflected on giving trends to their organization over the past 25 years.

Arleen 170x170 If you’ve had a test or procedure in any one of the hospitals or health centres operated by Nova Scotia Health Authority, chances are that some of the equipment used in your care was purchased by a healthcare foundation.

In the past five years alone, these 41 hospital foundations, have contributed more than $250-million to support patient care, education and research.

On November 27, provincial health care foundations and the Nova Scotia Health Authority are coming together as a collective to raise awareness about the essential work they do to support and enhance the delivery of health care and to thank the generous volunteers and donors who make that possible.
