Memorial Hockey Tournament of Fallen RCMP Officer to Benefit Journey Room

ShellyWynnThe Journey Room at South Shore Regional Hospital has been chosen as the benefactor of the 2nd annual Dave Wynn Memorial Classic.

It was two years ago in January RCMP Constable Dave Wynn was fatally shot while responding to a call in St. Albert, Alberta. Hearts simultaneously broke along the South Shore as Wynn had worked in Bridgewater as a paramedic for years.

As Wynn’s wife, Shelly, tried to decide where the funds raised during this year’s Memorial Classic should go, thinking of the passing of one of Dave’s close friends made her choice obvious.

“Jody (Cook) LeFave was an amazing woman and worked with Dave for many years. Our boys also played hockey together up until we left Bridgewater to start our new adventure in Alberta. After Jody's passing I saw an article about the Journey Room at the South Shore Regional Hospital; my heart filled with warmth as soon as I read it and learned of this place.”

LeFave is credited with naming the Journey Room and expressing passion for its creation.

“Although we lost Dave in a different way this is one thing that I wish I could have had while spending those four long days in the hospital; a place to go to get a break and some peace. So what a better way to remember Dave and Jody then to donate the money raised to the Journey Room.”

The tournament will take place at the Lawrencetown Exhibition Grounds February 10th – 12th, 2017. With a record number of teams registered, Organizer Jean-François Desfossés says the fundraising is off to a great start. “We have a couple of hot items that we are selling ticket. We have an autographed Connor McDavid jersey. There is also a one of a kind Dave Wynn tournament jersey autographed by all the Halifax Mooseheads players.”

Shelly Wynn plans to visit the Journey Room while she visits Nova Scotia for the tournament. She encourages everyone to spread the word about the tournament, “Help us raise awareness so we can make a difference for more families that have to endure the path we have of losing a loved one.”

Health Services Foundation Managing Director Arleen Stevens says she was pleasantly surprised when she heard of the fundraiser. “It just goes to show how much of a lasting impact our community and the care our hospitals provide can make, not just locally, but nationally.”
