3rd Annual Women's Giving Circle Funds Overdose Prevention Kits & Education

2016 Womens Giving Circle WinnersBRIDGEWATER— Lunenburg County will soon be home to one of the largest stockpiles of overdose prevention kits in the province, thanks to the generosity of nearly 100 women at the 2016 Charm Diamond Centres Women’s Giving Circle, held at the Best Western Plus Bridgewater, Wednesday evening.

While four worthy projects were presented to the gathering, the passionate overdose prevention kits and education appeal made by the Mental Health and Addictions Department was chosen by the women to receive $10,000 in funding.

The project consists of two elements: the first being the production of an education media project about the risks and dangers of emerging drug use trends such as fentanyl, carfentanil and hydromporphone. The project will also fund the construction of Naloxone (NarCan) kits to distribute to the community.

“We will have enough NarCan kits available in our own community to save more lives as there have been a number of overdoses that have happened over the past five years” says Brent Laybolt, presenter and Team Lead of the Withdrawal Management Primary Care Unit, Mental Health and Addictions at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital. “The funding will help us build kits faster as we have the tools to do that now. The PSA is a fantastic endeavor. The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore has enabled us to do two things at once and put every cent to saving lives.”

Phil Bradfield, Chair of the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore Board, says he was enthralled by the presentations. “During the staff presentations I was overwhelmed by the passion our caregivers have for improving the lives of the patients they serve. At the Foundation we share this passion and will certainly do what we can to support the initiatives that will help improve the quality of care on the South Shore.”
