Essential Meeting Space at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Receives Necessary Makeover

Assembly Room Reopening“It’s no longer a dream; it is really here.”

Eager staff filled the infamous Assembly Room at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg, November 1st, to see its highly-anticipated renovations.

The five-month facelift of the room, where staff and community groups can hold meetings, may have started in June but was a project nearly two decades in the making. Rob Zwicker, Health Systems Lead for Fishermen’s Memorial, South Shore Regional, Queens General hospitals notes the changes needed to happen, as much for the community as for the hospital.

“This project has been the vision for many people over a lot of years. During my first meeting here I realized we needed to modernize this space. This is a real community hospital and this is a real community space. A lot of people benefit from this upgrade.”

The renovation included new air-handling units, new lighting, video conferencing abilities with state of the art technology in both rooms, wireless microphones, and many other cosmetic improvements, including the removal of the room’s noticeable shag carpet.

Another big change is the ability to divide the room into two meeting spaces, which will now be named the Founder’s Room & the Legacy Room, as named by the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore and the Fishermen’s Memorial Auxiliary, in honour of the two organizations providing the $120,000 needed for the project.

Nurse Manager Cindy Dares notes the project would not have come to be without the financial backing of the Foundation & Auxiliary. “This hospital was built on teamwork and it is so nice to have more proof that this teamwork continues to exist.

While the meeting space showcases its new technology and freshly-painted walls, it still contains nods to the past, including books, an original hospital sign and a boardroom meeting table, donated by a Lunenburg company after the expansion of Fishermen’s Memorial in the 1970s.

Both the Founders & Legacy rooms are available for use as of November 4th, 2019.
