South Shore Bursary Program Grows with Additional Partnership

handsThe South Shore Bursary Program is soon going to be able to financially support more local students pursuing a career in healthcare.

The South Shore Regional Hospital Auxiliary will start contributing to the successful bursary this fall, joining the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary the Queens General Hospital Foundation and two anonymous donors.

The program offers up to $5,000 to high school, college and university students in Lunenburg and Queens Counties pursuing health-related careers. The Bursary is set up to be a win-win, with successful bursary recipients required to enter into a Return-of-Service Agreement, post-graduation, with the Nova Scotia Health Authority, and be required to work on the South Shore, becoming employed by the NSHA for no fewer than the same number of years that the recipient was provided support by the Bursary Program.

It’s not just for students though. Nova Scotia Health Authority employees from Lunenburg and Queens Counties returning to an accredited learning institution for education that will result in a change in the employee's profession are also eligible to apply.

In eleven years, the South Shore Bursary Program has supported over 100 students and employees. While the majority of these recipients graduated as Registered Nurses, the Bursary has also supported two Laboratory Technicians, a Nurse Practitioner and a Respiratory Therapist.

In 2018, $87,000 in bursaries were given out to successful applicants. The 2019 South Shore Bursary Program application is now live; click here to apply.
