$1-Million Donated to Health Services Foundation’s MIS Suite Project

20180613 152603It’s a donation that will not only positively impact today’s South Shore residents, but will make for a healthier tomorrow.

The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore is pleased to announce a $1-million donation has been made by Stephen Sander and his family, completing the funding necessary to bring a Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) Suite to South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.

The creation of a MIS Suite has been a priority at South Shore Regional Hospital for a long time. MIS is now standard in operating rooms, using laparoscopic technology for its procedures. This equipment completes the surgery through a few small incisions rather than one large opening, resulting in less pain, faster recovery and shorter hospital stays for patients.

Talks around the donation began last fall, shortly after Mr. Sander went public with his desire to give back and make a difference in Bridgewater, the town that gave the India-native his start in Canada.

“Bridgewater is where my Canadian journey began and it will always hold a special place in my heart as my Canadian home town,” says Mr. Sander. “I would not have been able to go on to build such a successful business or have such a wonderful family without the generosity of this community. They gave me a new start after so many hardships and for this I will be forever grateful.”

Arleen Stevens, Executive Director of the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore is amazed by the generosity of Mr. Sander to help make the $1.4-million wish a reality.

“This is by far the largest initiative the Health Services Foundation has ever taken on, and to have Mr. Sander and his family give this project its final donation is wonderful,” Stevens says. “Since discussions began, it has always been clear that Mr. Sander wants to give back to ensure Bridgewater, the town that has meant so much to him, keeps growing and thriving. This wonderful $1-million donation will do just that by increasing the quality of healthcare locally and ensuring we can retain and attract surgeons on

the South Shore with the latest technology available. This project means so much to the residents of the South Shore and we can’t thank Mr. Sander enough for his extreme kindness and vision.”

The surgical team at South Shore Regional Hospital is already looking forward to the completion of this project. “Patients will be able to return to their everyday life faster and typically have a shorter recovery period,” says SSRH Medical Lead Dr. Cheryl Pugh. “The smaller incisions speed recovery time and result in less pain for the patient. This is technology both new and seasoned professionals will want to use here at South Shore Regional.”

South Shore Regional Hospital is the only regional hospital in Nova Scotia not to have a MIS Suite. Construction to convert a current operating room into a MIS Suite is tentatively scheduled to begin in Fall 2018.
