Millions Left to South Shore Healthcare through Legacy Gifts

planned giving handsWhile it is not a popular topic around the dinner table, leaving final donations to charities in wills is now a common practice and has been some time. The proof? The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore found it as they reflected on giving trends to their organization over the past 25 years.

Since receiving its first estate donation in 1994, the Health Services Foundation has received over $3.1-million in generous final donations, named in the wills of faithful donors, but also from those you would never expect.

“It’s astounding,” says Arleen Stevens, Executive Director of the Health Services Foundation. “We have conversations with donors from time to time about their will and what they want their legacy to be. These donations have certainly made an impact on both South Shore Regional Hospital and Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, from helping purchase new equipment, to education, to health services. Legacy gifts come in all sizes. But when you add up the donations, the total is amazing!”

The total is comprised of donations from 99 individual estates, not counting those on the South Shore who have already invested and named the Health Services Foundation as the benefactor of an insurance policy.

Stevens notes it is the Health Services Foundation’s policy to honour the final wishes of the donor’s gift. “When we look at donors who have planned for the Foundation in their will, some have set aside a certain monetary figure to donate, while others have designated the donation of the residue of their estate. We have even received a house! In the end it is truly about how you want your legacy to impact your community.”

May is Leave a Legacy month in Nova Scotia. You too can make a lasting impact when organizing your will and can help by talking with family and friends about your final wishes and charity of choice. If you are interested in leaving a gift to your local hospitals in your will please discuss this gift with your legal and financial advisors.
