Foundation Aims to Upgrade Ultrasound Technology at SSRH

Ultrasound We Are Replacing Radiothon 2018As we enter 2018, the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore is already working towards its annual Radiothon, aiming to replace another piece of equipment passed its lifespan at South Shore Regional Hospital.

Radiothon 2018, the Foundation’s largest one-day fundraiser, has set a goal of $150,000 to purchase a new ultrasound unit for the Diagnostic Imaging department at the regional site. The machine is ten years old, two years past the industry standard, but still performs approximately 3,000 exams annually.

Dr. Chen Meng, Site Lead for Radiology at South Shore Regional Hospital, has been working in the department for twelve years and says he’s excited to have this piece of equipment replaced. “Ultrasounds are widely used. It’s an exam that doesn’t use radiation so it’s great for children and pregnant women. We also conduct ultrasound exams on stroke patients to see if there are blockages. Pretty much any medical issue you can think of, ultrasound has a use. With the support of the Foundation, the radio stations and the generosity of the public, this machine will help us make better diagnoses, help people more and maybe even allow us to offer new services.”

Morgan Sampson, an ultrasonographer at South Shore Regional Hospital, echoes those thoughts. “It will save time and manual labour for sure. Having a new ultrasound unit will allow us to book more exams and allow our schedule to be a bit more flexible. It benefits everyone, even before you are born!”

Sampson has spent only a portion of her young career at the Bridgewater hospital. She admits she has worked and trained on newer ultrasound technology. “For me, the image on the machine we are replacing is very grainy, not nearly as detailed as our other two ultrasound machines. It is still good for certain cases but we are limited with what we can do with this particular unit. “

Radiothon 2018 hits local airwaves on CKBW and Country 100.7 February 14th. Pledges can be made early to the Health Services Foundation.
