Laboratory Needs

The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore is seeking to bring the best equipment to our very busy medical services laboratory. We are currently raising funds to bring our laboratory at South Shore Regional Hospital new equipment to improve the quality and efficiency of patient diagnosis. Laboratory results are critical to making the right diagnosis. Lab results provide 85% of the information for all diagnosis. With your help we will buy the following equipment:

1. Osmometer - provides acid based balance testing most often for patients in the Emergency Room. This is a priority item which no longer functions to capacity and can be down for the lengthy periods of time. This down time reduces the opportunity for specific testing available to ER patients and their doctors. The cost is $20,077.

2. Centrifuge Urinalysis - This aged centrifuge spins urine so the lab technologist can look for sediment in our cells. This centrifuge has been removed from the lab as it was failing. Staff is currently finding other testing methods for the time being. The cost is $14,294.

3. Minus 30C Chemistry Freezer - This speicalized freeser stores all reagents used for testing processes in the lab. These reagents are critical components to tests and are valued at $80,000. This freezer has reached teh end of its life. Should the freezer break down the reagents would need to be packed in dry ice and transported urgently to another site for storage. The cost is $9,210.

4. Centrifuge Main Lab - This centrifuge was started 100 times daily for 15 minute intervals. Our lab standards are such that it would spin each sample within 90 minutes of collection. This centrifuge is no longer in working order and has been removed from the lab. Staff are using alternative testing methods for the time being. The cost is $9,998.

5. Stat Centrifuge - This is another centrifuge used for spinning samples. The cost is $5,612.

6. Domestic Refrigerator - Our current refridgerator came from the Old Dawson Hospital. All specimens are refridgeratedfor 72 hoursafter testing in case the physician requests an additional test. This fridge holds at least 500 chemistry smaples daily with multitude of seperate tests on each sample. The cost is $1,100.
