Health Services Foundation Purchases New Bone Densitometry Machine

bdm1 1The Health Services Foundation has fully funded another piece of essential equipment to Fishermen's Memorial Hospital: a new bone densitometry machine.

The latest piece of equipment for the Diagnostic Imaging department was purchase in the summer of 2016 with a price tag of nearly $100,000. It may look like a fancy scanner but this machine is an important tool in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Its most important use is in helping determine what a person’s fracture (broken bone) risk is and whether or not they will need osteoporosis treatment to prevent a broken bone.

About 1600 bone densitometry exams are performed annually at the Fishermen's. The Health Services Foundation also purchased the hospital's first bone densitometry machine in 1999.
