The heritage bonspiel has been raising funds for various departments in Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg since its inception at the turn of the century. Funds raised through this year’s event will go to purchasing new equipment for the hospital’s Physiotherapy Department, including a shockwave therapy machine which will allow Lunenburg County residents the opportunity to receive this treatment within their local public healthcare.

On February 14th, the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore, as well CKBW and Country 100.7 raise $100,566 towards upgrading essential surgical equipment in the Operating Room at South Shore Regional Hospital.

Managing Director Arleen Stevens says while they didn’t reach their goal, raising over $100,000 in a day is quite an accomplishment.

It was two years ago in January RCMP Constable Dave Wynn was fatally shot while responding to a call in St. Albert, Alberta. Hearts simultaneously broke along the South Shore as Wynn had worked in Bridgewater as a paramedic for years.

As Wynn’s wife, Shelly, tried to decide where the funds raised during this year’s Memorial Classic should go, thinking of the passing of one of Dave’s close friends made her choice obvious.

It’s not every day you get to view the inside of the Operating Room at South Shore Regional Hospital, and if you do, you are usually not paying attention to the equipment surrounding you.

Ahead of Radiothon 2017, the O.R. department peeled back its curtains to show a fortunate few the pieces of equipment the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore has on its list to replace.

“We always try to spread around the money generously donated by the community to the different departments. This year we want to make an impact on the operating rooms,” says Arleen Stevens, Managing Director of the Health Services Foundation. “Certainly these pieces of equipment were on a priority list. We work with the Nova Scotia Health Authority Site Manager on that list and we buy the equipment that is seen as the biggest priority in this area.”

Radiothon 2017 Online Auction Home Page

The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore is constantly looking for ways to grow and improve how you give to its annual Radiothon fundraiser. This year the Foundation is going high-tech with its popular Radiothon auction, taking it to the world wide web for Radiothon 2017!

“We are very excited this year about moving the auction to an online platform,” says Phil Bradfield, Chair of the Health Services Foundation’s Board. “Bidders will be able to see in real time how the auction is progressing and instantaneously respond on items they are interested in purchasing. This is a huge leap forward for us.”

Having the auction online will also allow excited bidders to place bids early. Instead of being a one day only event, Radiothon 2017’s auction will launch February 1st and run until 5pm on February 14th.

We are officially one month away from Radiothon 2017! This year’s mission is to raise $175,000 to replace essential pieces of surgical equipment in the Operating Room in South Shore Regional Hospital.

It’s going to take donations of all sizes to achieve $175,000, which is why the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore is introducing a new way to give: the Radiothon Bucket Brigade! On February 3rd, fantastic volunteers will be hitting local hot spots, throughout Lunenburg County, seeking change with our buckets. Watch on social media and the Health Services Foundation’s website to find out where you can donate; your change will help us make a BIG change.

"We are thrilled to offer the community a new way to give with our first Radiothon Bucket Brigade," says Arleen Stevens, Managing Director of the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore. "Our goal is high this year so the Foundation is asking for even more community support. We are inviting people to come out, have fun, and make a difference in our biggest Radiothon yet."
